Our Story

The Gap in Exposure and Achievement

At Black 'N Bio, our mission is rooted in a striking disparity: African Americans comprise 11% of the total U.S. workforce but only 8% of STEM professionals.  This underrepresentation in science and technology fields is more than a statistic; it is a clear indication of untapped potential and missed opportunities.

Research from the National Science Foundation (NSF) shows that Black students exhibit strong aptitudes for STEM careers but often lack exposure to viable career pathways.  This lack of exposure significantly limits their opportunities for entry and advancement in STEM industries. [1,2]  A closer examination of exposure gaps across STEM disciplines underscores this disparity:

Advanced Manufacturing - 75% Gap

Health Sciences - 57% Gap

Architecture & Construction - 56% Gap

Computer Science & Technology - 51% Gap

Educational Attainment vs Career Placement

While 24% of African Americans earn degrees in the sciences, only 8% find employment in science-related occupations.  Approximately 40% of African American undergraduate students leave STEM majors before completing their degree programs.  The reasons?  A complex mix of lack of guidance, insufficient mentorship, and a narrow awareness of the career opportunities available to them.
